Punakha Dzong

The dzong or fortress of Punakha represents perhaps the first united sovereign statehood of Bhutan. It was built in 1637, after the Zhabdugn unified Bhutan and when first statehood and government of Bhutan was formed. It is the ancient capitol building of Bhutan and even now remains to be winter residence of Chief Abbot of Bhutan and the Central Monk Body
